CUSTOMS REGISTRATION - An Overview
In today’s interconnected world, international trade has become an essential
component of economic growth and business expansion. For Indian businesses, engaging
in cross-border trade offers immense opportunities—new markets, diversified revenue,
access to global suppliers, and participation in international supply chains.
However, before a business can import or export goods, it must go through one
critical regulatory step: Customs Registration. This is not just a procedural
formality—it’s a mandatory legal requirement that ensures compliance and credibility
in the global trading ecosystem.
Any business, whether small or large, that wishes to engage in import or export must
obtain an Importer Exporter Code (IEC) from the Directorate General of Foreign Trade
(DGFT), and register with the Indian Customs Department via platforms like ICEGATE.
